"We really wanted to inspire people to chase their dreams, meet others, be open-minded to new music, be ready for the unexpected, celebrate change."

SIMON GHAHARY

In the beginning

Operating between 1994–1999, Blue Room Released was founded by Simon Ghahary to partly meld music (the software) with the hardware (Podspeakers), a natural evolution to what was to come providing a holistic Blue Room sound experience while reinforcing a paramount allegiance to music to which it was inspired.

With the financial backing of Robert Trunz, then head of British B&W loudspeakers, Ghahary developed Blue Room as an uncompromising experiment in sound, searching and providing new music and styles with fine detail on production and reproduction environments and shared listening experiences. Blue Room was musically A&R by Simon Ghahary, with label manager Mick Paterson (formerly Nova Mute/Mute Records) bringing industry experience and expertise with a dedicated team in Shoreditch, London.

"During a time when electronic music was walking a fine line of fragmenting itself into too many different categories, we were growing a wider audience by mixing genres and introducing new styles to our audience. It dissolved subcultures submerging them within the borderless Blue Room environment. Good music is, after all, good music, regardless of its genre."

The label connected the Blue Room to the forefront of musical innovation courtesy of an assembled global roster of talented electronic music artists. Starting with dancefloor singles and compilations of techno electronica, spiced with an underpinning of psychedelia and soundscapes. Its original sound was hypnotic tribal percussion with sweeping electronica. The work of Juno Reactor, Total Eclipse, The Saafi Brothers, Acid Rockers, Deviant Electronics and X-Dream are examples of, amongst many other projects, that personify Blue Room's spirit of evolving new sounds. Compilations like Signs Of Life and Freekstyle weaved and widened the evolution of the Blue Room even further.

Furthermore, Blue Room encouraged their artists to experiment unrestricted to try out and assimilate new sounds and styles, to continuously evolve their sound.

"Some tracks were so rare at the time I considered them sacred. They were found on journies buying vinyl or DAT (Digital Audio Tape) to DAT, following the sound wherever it may be. Each Global location is full of emergent discoveries and new bands."

From a visual storytelling point of view, the record label also successfully carried the mystique around the Blue Room identity. It allowed new mediums at the time, such as live events, websites, many record covers, and even merchandise, to visually manifest and explore a window into the psyche of the Blue Room. Although related, it's fluid and contemporary visual narrative leaped away from how we presented the Minipod and Blue Room Loudspeakers.

The combined successes of our pod range of designs, the Blue Room brand and the stable of artists that made up the Blue Room Released record label enabled the opportunity to open an office with some fine like-minded fellows in San Francisco led by Nicholas Crayson.

Our presence helped fan the interest in early dance music on the West Coast; our theme was being played loud on Haight & Ashbury, while small record shops sprouted up, all supporting electronic music. From here, Blue Room ran promotional events, launch parties and concerts, all supporting the Blue Room Released release roster, allowing artists to perform, some for their first time in the US.
